There was a time I believed in numbers, logic, and data to make the world a better place. Math could solve the world's problems, I thought. Until one day, as a grad student in water sciences, I built a model that would have been simply useless with just data. It needed a human touch, that is, the intuition and experience of people who actually surveyed the land. It totally changed my mind. In that case, I figured, I might as well do art. I'm thinking of this today because last week the news broke that Instagram and Facebook have been using our social media posts to train their AI models at generating fake art and images, and there's no way to opt out in the US. AI is increasingly invading creative fields and that is really scary. I don't know about you, but I don't want a world run by machines. Many artists like myself have been wondering how to protect our work and fight back against AI. Thousands of us have joined Cara, a new social platform created by artists, for artists, where you'll find no AI-generated "art." Time will tell if this app will last, but for now I made a profile on there. Other measures I've taken is to make my Instagram profile private and remove all images from my public Facebook page. If you follow me on Instagram you'll still see my posts (and for those who don't, you can request access). Also, if you go to my Ingenious Oracle website you'll now see a landing page. I took the old site down because it's hosted on Adobe, which was also called into question last week. My animations are still on Instagram (for now), but I just created a page for them on my website. Check out the latest four: the Rival, Adventurer, Planner, and Partner. Together they form a mini hero's journey complete with venturing into the unknown, meeting a whale, and bringing back the elixir at the end. |

Remember the painting I showed you in January? Figured I would do one for my other nephew, the younger brother, who’s now seventeen. Same size, 9"x12", also acrylics on canvas. While the last painting was spontaneous and improvised, like jazz, for this one I put together a moodboard and designed the room be something like a garden of Eden. Lots of blues and greens, contrast of black and white, plants, a fruit bowl, Matisse’s naked dancers... doesn't it feel like Paradise? |

On my blog this month I explore the meaning of Pisces. The myth is about Aphrodite and rebirth, and the two fishes in opposite directions swimming in circles, reminded me of the movie Groundhog Day: Phil reliving the same day over and over, until he learns how to love. Change is hard! And it takes time. Sometimes what feels like eternity. |
